The State of things

Oh how i miss posting stuff. Its a week since my last post. Now technically i still owe that entire post that i lost, but frankly i couldn't be arsed writing it again.

So instead i'll give you rants and snippets of stuff i tried to compose on friday and other idea's floating around in my head....

It's Life Jim.... set face's to study:

-The Charter of Amenable co-habitation with others;
Sub-section: Parental Relations
Chapter 4 - Successful study starts with the truth.

In the case of impending examinations a child, teenager or later life college resident of a parent's house is expected to share all truth's in relation to said examinations.

This will include, Subjects and what they cover, exam dates and whether you know them or not despite the more complicated and belated nature of college examinations. Honesty as a policy is the only way successful co-habitation with concerned or financing parents will want to receive as well as expected success rather than failure.

Lies may be used sparingly as by this stage parents will know your tells. They will understand your habits. They will know how a lie will be worded, how it will be constructed and how small or large it may be. You can test as many as you like but no matter what the scale a parent will still have doubts as to your level of honesty. So being Honest, to an extent is the best policy.

This however excludes the absolute truth. If a student, co-habitant, spounging youth, has not worked at all, then revealing this fact is detrimental to said student's health. Health being, mental health, physical health, social life, financial life and of course procrastination quotients. Liberal dispensing of the truth, half-truths and dismissing non-informative statements are all acceptable. Flat out lies claiming you know the entire periodic table or the collected works of W.B Yates are not acceptable.

Procrastination is also a massive issue which a student/co-habitant must avoid.

The Devil make's use of idle hands was not a fairy tale for the catholic age. It is a sick and irrefutable truth that if a student should be doing something important to their education they will don something else. It is the bread to a students butter, or marmite depending on taste's and budget.

Website's and service's to be avoided:

Facebook- Liking that your friend is scuba diving with dolphins is not good for your study.
Bebo - Minitaxi is not educational
PerezHilton - Which celeb is a drug wreck is NOT educational
Stumple Upon - Is more about humour and the idiocy of the masses than education
Digg - Is the youtube of popular trends, ie the lowest form of life
Youtube - Unless its a how to perform an appendectomy video, stay away!
Google - Limitless possibilities to procrastinate
Pornhub - We may all have urges but you don't need to be the reason it's the 49th most popular website on the web. You scratch that itch AFTER exams.

Creating a routine is also essential. Prompts, Calendars, to do lists, nagging friends, study buddies, limited function mobile phones (ie no apps, wap, mp3's or internet), and NO DOODLE's.

Once you have a routine of cramming in information it shall be your life until you pass exams. 70% will disappear. IT may be available when necessary but REAL life is learned through action and in-action. Once qualified you will really learn how to perform in your field, education is just to get you to that point. Parents are also the support structure and financial source for some of the means to reach this arbitrary point in the future where you will be a semi-independent Co-habitant.

Translation:

I have to study flat out and work for the next 3 or so weeks. I really can't get anything done while sitting here at home.

So i will "ration" my Internet use, difficult i know, and i will be in the library. With Gammaman giving me the odd pep talk here and there to help me get shit done.

I can do 3 weeks hard slog. I have to. I have no choice. I would rather wallow and do nothing and ye know fuck over my future because i don't want to deal with it. Hopefully not anymore.

Work. Passing exams. Exercise, more than the small waits and all of ten sit-ups i've started lately. And of course more of a face to face social life.

Even on placement from september to december i will fit in as much Society stuff as possible. Forge on with my friendships and so on. And of course make new one's with the freshers, those poor basterds.

Cinephillia:

A Remake, a movie i hadn't seen, a classic parody and a Classic Classic.

So over the weekend i had a bit of dvd night at DS's. First we saw the Taking of Pelham 1-23. Which was surprisingly good.

Sure it was cliched and similar to a lot of other things but it was fun enough. Funny in place's although a little disappointing. If anything it suffered by trying to be "modern". The racing across new york was disorientating and didn't show you much. Vicious, violent and fast and despite that being the point of the chase it just became hard to watch because you couldn't see much.

The acting however was very good. And good turns from everyone. It didn't need any more or any less in most scenes. It didn't over play anything. Its a pity it bombed in the states, but its defensive reaction-ism for them to avoid anything to do with Terrorism, especially in relation to New York.

Make's you think how have ratings and sale's of Die Hard with A Vengeance fared since 2001? Its a classic action movie. Although its obvious that "The Siege", a awful racist thriller "warning" of Muslim extremism has also fared pretty badly over the years.

Then at DS's the first DVD of the evening, after hours killing the cops in GTA4 was AKIRA.

I had never seen AKIRA before. It was on my wish list. I knew of its legendary status but had yet to bask in its glory.

I was not disappointed. IF there was a movie to blow your mind, its AKIRA. Wow. I love my sci-fi, i love anime but never seem to watch to much, but damn this was amazing.

Ghost in the Shell was easily more complicated but this movie left my mind well and truely "blown". I was in awe of the spectacle, of the plot twists, of the enjoyment, of the sheer scale of the task.

2 and a half hours of hand drawn wonder. And despite loving every minute i also couldn't help but try to imagine what it would be like as a live action movie...

DS is glad that the rumoured live action version led by Leonardo Di Caprio's film company has been canceled. But i can't help think what it would really be like?

Either amazing or insulting. Hopefully not another speed racer....

We then watched Family Guy's Blue Harvest, which DS had not seen.

Its rather brilliant. And only film buffs, nerds, fan boys, and those culturally attune to everything referenced would get all the joke's.

I for one can't wait to see Something, Something Darkside. The Empire Strikes Back Spoof that will be released later this year. After all it's the ONLY good star wars film....

Then we watched THE USUAL SUSPECTS.

Its so bloody good it entertains even when you know the ending. Which is also the start of the movie...

Its a brilliantly acted, well written, well edited and pure entertainment thriller that grabs any audience.

Even knowing its now INFAMOUS twist i was still twisted and turned by the plot. I questioned every motive. Thought of every moment. Was it all a lie, or just a twisting of the truth. We will never know, and that's what's amazing about it.

And the ending, WOW.....

GUMSHOE:

I love Gumshoe. Otherwise and more commonly known as Film Noir. Gumshoe more specifically is Noir centering around Private detective's and those who speak in the very unique fast witted way of Gumshoe movie's.

Prime Example's being, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, Gumshoe and Brick.

Gumshoe being an amazing Homage starring Albert Finney. It may be a British movie but its use of the language and plot style is brilliant. And its a favourite of mine. Especially since it apparently is a late night special of the bbc's to show this movie at 1am at least twice a year. A very special treat indeed!

As for Brick. Words can not describe how good the line's in that film make me feel. It requires active thought to follow everyone. It's a similar joy to reading subtitle's you almost have to read the line's as they are spoken. Understanding the rhyming slang, the subtle and blunt phrase's that are unique to that world. Its just a joy to watch. As is most movie's featuring Noir type dialogue.

I wish i could write wit like that. I really do. After all i have inspiration from a family friend that i call my "Aunt" who is a Lesbian private detective. In Ireland of all place's in the late 80's and 90's that would be a perfect fictional setting for her. Of course she does relatively normal work, but think of the story possibilities! Crooked TD's, Developers, Gang Members with infamous nicknames, future mover's and shakers all vieing for Ireland's upcoming boom. There's many a story there!

I have a few other idea's floating around in word file's but they're not Perfected yet. So toodle's for now. I will be "studying" hopefully by tomorrow. So expect less chance of a blog... or not...
